Why visit Egypt

Egypt holds one of the world’s oldest and most remarkable civilisations. You can stand before the Great Pyramid of Giza, walk through the vast temples of Karnak, descend into painted tombs in the Valley of the Kings and sail the Nile past villages and date palms.

Beyond the ancient sites, Egypt offers lively Cairo, Mediterranean Alexandria, and some of the best diving and snorkelling in the world along the Red Sea. It works well for first-time Africa travellers, history lovers, families and beach seekers alike.

Top places to visit in Egypt

Cairo and Giza

See the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx, the Grand Egyptian Museum near the pyramids, historic Islamic Cairo, the Khan el-Khalili bazaar and a felucca ride on the Nile at sunset.

Luxor

Often called the world’s greatest open-air museum: Karnak and Luxor temples on the East Bank, and the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens and the Temple of Hatshepsut on the West Bank. Sunrise hot-air balloon rides are popular.

Nile cruise

A classic way to travel between Luxor and Aswan, stopping at the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo along the way. Cruises usually run three to five nights.

Aswan and Abu Simbel

Relaxed Aswan offers Philae Temple, Nubian villages and felucca rides. From here, take a day trip to the colossal temples of Ramesses II at Abu Simbel.

Red Sea coast

Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab and Marsa Alam offer resorts, coral reefs, diving and snorkelling — a perfect way to finish a history-filled trip.

Alexandria

Egypt’s Mediterranean city, founded by Alexander the Great. Visit the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Citadel of Qaitbay and the seafront Corniche.

Best time to visit Egypt

The best time to visit is roughly October to April, when days are warm and sunny and evenings are cool. December to February is peak season, so book Nile cruises and hotels early.

Summer (June to August) is very hot, especially in Luxor and Aswan, though the Red Sea coast stays popular. During the holy month of Ramadan, sites stay open, but some opening hours change and restaurants may be quieter during the day.

Entry requirements and visas

Most visitors, including Canadians, need a visa for Egypt. Many nationalities can apply online for an e-visa before travelling, and visa-on-arrival options have been available for some passports at major airports. Requirements for Canadians have changed in recent years, so confirm the current rules before you book.

Always check the official Government of Canada travel advice for Egypt (or your own government’s equivalent) before booking, and confirm details with the nearest Egypt embassy, high commission or consulate.

  • A passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date
  • An e-visa or the correct visa for your nationality
  • A return or onward ticket
  • Hotel or cruise booking details

Getting there and getting around

Most international visitors fly into Cairo International Airport (CAI). There are also international flights to Luxor and to Red Sea resorts such as Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh.

Domestic flights connect Cairo with Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea. Overnight sleeper trains run between Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, and Nile cruises link Luxor and Aswan. In Cairo, ride-hailing apps are widely used and often easier than street taxis. A private driver or guide is the simplest way to reach the major sites.

Money, costs and practical tips

  • The Egyptian pound (EGP) is the local currency. Exchange money at banks, official exchange offices or ATMs.
  • Cards are accepted at hotels, larger restaurants and shops, but carry cash for taxis, markets, entry to smaller sites and tips.
  • Tipping (baksheesh) is part of daily life — keep small notes handy for guides, drivers and helpers.
  • Agree prices before taking a taxi without a meter, a camel ride or a felucca trip.
  • Electricity is 220V with European-style Type C and F plugs.

Health and safety

Egypt’s main tourist areas — Cairo, Giza, Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea resorts — welcome millions of visitors, but some regions, including parts of the Sinai and border areas, are subject to official travel warnings. Check the latest travel advice before you go and follow local guidance.

Drink bottled water, protect yourself from the sun and heat, and expect persistent sellers at major sites — a polite, firm “la, shukran” (no, thank you) usually works. Travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly recommended.

Culture and etiquette

  • Dress modestly, especially in mosques and outside resort areas; women should bring a scarf to cover their hair in mosques.
  • Remove your shoes before entering a mosque.
  • Ask before photographing people. Some sites charge extra for cameras, and drones are restricted.
  • During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours.
  • Use your right hand to give and receive items.

Sample Egypt itinerary

  • Days 1–3: Cairo and Giza — pyramids, Sphinx, Grand Egyptian Museum, Islamic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili.
  • Days 4–5: Luxor — Karnak, Luxor Temple, Valley of the Kings and a sunrise balloon ride.
  • Days 6–8: Nile cruise to Aswan — Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae.
  • Day 9: Abu Simbel — day trip from Aswan.
  • Days 10–12: Red Sea — relax, snorkel or dive in Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh.
